“It feels good to be in a community. Community, above all, is bigger than individuals–we are something much more than individuals when we are part of a community. And this is how things ought to be.”
~ Tony Blackshaw

JUNE WRITER’S SERIES: CREATING A WRITER’S COMMUNITY
JOIN A CRITIQUE GROUP
Let’s face it. As a writer, it’s hard to read your own story with an impartial, critical eye. A critique partner or online writing group can provide accountability, offer support and give you a valuable outside perspective. We found a great page sharing lots of resources on Critique Groups at KidLit411.com.
Insider Tip: Don’t feel compelled to pay big bucks to join a Critique or Writer’s Group. Many of the very best groups are Free Facebook or Twitter Writing Groups. Ask your writing class to form a smaller critique group or inquire at your local SCBWI chapter if they have a method for organizing a group.
PARTICIPATE IN ONLINE LEARNING
There are a TON of resources available out there to help create a writing community for yourselves. Children’s author and blogger, Zanna Louise, created a great list of PODCASTS she recommends to Children’s Book authors. The Highlights Foundation also lists regular WORKSHOPS (both in person and online) on their site.
Insider Tip: We have two colleagues that offer picture book consulting! These pros take your fresh idea or completed picture book and offer advice on what direction to take or recommendations at a reasonable price. Check out Rob Broder and Rachel Pellegrino!
ATTEND CONFERENCES
The National SCBWI Summer Spectacular Conference is VIRTUAL this summer! What is usually a week-long event in California is now available for you to participate online and the conference resources will be available to you for an entire MONTH! In addition, the Michigan SCBWI Chapter lists weekly, smaller EVENTS ONLINE that are GREAT for networking and meeting other writers. Check your local chapter for similar events.
Insider Tip: Most conferences create closed Facebook pages to engage with the community and get folks excited for the events. Many times friends and colleagues are created through networking at these events. Use your social media to your advantage and use the conference or event hashtag when you post photos, follow the event on Twitter and start conversations!
