During the summer of 2020, our publishing company hosted an interview series with popular bookstores and libraries across the country. Our founder, Maria Dismondy, hosted the interviews. We got to take an inside look into these creative spaces that house our favorite things—books and books and readers!

Covid-19 caused a lot of heartache and disappointment in the world. But it couldn’t take books away from readers. Find out how these professionals in the industry used creative thinking to present out of the box ideas to offer programming and more to their readers.

In this interview, we heard from Lauren Tolman at the Springville Public Library.

Interview Highlights

  • Springville Public Library uses a bookstore model of cataloguing and shelving, especially in the Children’s section where the books are face up for easy browsing.
  • The children’s section of the library has this interactive ‘painted mirror’ where kids can have fun with 10 different kinds for picture book based interactive experience. For example, the kids can scare the bunnies as they reach toward them or they can pick the apples off the tree if they reach up.
  • They have a power wall where they display all of the library’s popular & ‘got to have them’ books. Again, they have the books all face out for easy browsing for the kids and see the cover and flip through.
  • In keeping with their mission statement which is transforming lives through a world of knowledge, discovery and imagination, they have a Discovery Kids section where the kids can do things like sewing, playing the piano, photography, and so on.
