It took a year to write and edit this book. Months working with photographer Sarah Luczak on multiple photoshoots for the book Sunny Side Upbringing. It was a labor of love. A parenting book that teaches positive character traits. A parenting book that is about REAL LIFE. A parenting book like no other on the market.
Maria began the release and book tour with a media blitz in Michigan. The news started sharing the books messages with parents, caregivers and educators. Children are our future and they need our guidance. They need us to teach them about love, kindness, empathy and above all, accepting others who are different from us. It was a fantastic start to the book’s release and then…..Covid-19.
Within 24 hours of school closures and 18 canceled appearances, Maria put an idea out in the world. She would teach children from her home, lessons that are taught in the new book. Maria would do this for free because it was a scary time, emotions were at an all time high and she needed a way to help and at the same time, calm her own anxieties about the unknown.
Sunny Side Home School began on Friday March 13th. Three days a week, thirty minutes each time, Maria taught lessons to hundreds of children. 2000-ish families signed up for these classes and almost 8,000 took interest.
Looking back, these lessons were everything to Maria and her three school aged children who attended every lesson by her side. Kindness, empathy, sibling rivalry, communication, forgiveness, and so many other social skills were taught. Maria was able to connect with the children via zoom . Their favorite part was show and tell before and after class. Maria met several of the students pets during this time!
Parent feedback flooded Maria’s inbox. Families were grateful and thankful.
Sunny Side Upbringing had a rocky entry into the market with Coronavirus but just like its name, the author found the sunshine in the rain!

This book is as beautiful as it is empowering! As a mom, I want to raise the best human beings that I can, but where do you find the time or energy to figure out how to do that? Dismondy addresses those big looming topics that I know I SHOULD be helping my children develop (like empathy, kindness, and patience) but that always seem so big and daunting that I just keep putting it off. Sunny Side Upbringing gives you one manageable topic to address per month and though it’s packed full of activities, information, and ideas, it’s organized in such a way that you won’t feel overwhelmed.Carrie Clark
